First results with Cellulose

Took delivery of some Ready to Use black celly yesterday and my spray gun regulator so decided to give some primered wheels I had in the shed a colour coat.

The gun is a cheapy, 1.4 Clarke £35 spray gun from Machine Mart and I had the gun pressure at 40psi.

This is the finish I'm getting with playing around a bit with the gun settings, It's way too orange peely for my liking:







Is this the standard of finish that Ready to use celly will give, along with a cheapy gun?

OKish, but dry, slower with gun or more thinners could help but if it is your first go it is good wheels are a pain do many angles faces it is east to get runs if not sprinters, might have been better to let it tack & another coat so as it flowed more.

Are you sure it's ready to use and does not need thinning? The gloss is not very good either.

Those Clarke guns use a lot of air, are you sure you had a stable 40 psi with the trigger pulled? Are you getting a nice wet coat?

I bought it as I don't have any gloss thinners yet etc.

The pressure is bang on 40psi through out while spraying and I was getting a decent wet coat but I could see it was going on very peely. I also think it was drying way too fast as while I was going around the spokes it would have dried when I got back to the start again meaning I'd be getting dry spots all over.

Maybe it's just poor quality paint?

For under 9 quid a litre I would say it's got to be rubbish paint, probably with poor quality fast thinners in too.

Maybe I could save it with putting some celly lacquer over it.

Sometimes being a tight, cheapskate Yorkshireman isn't half a pain in the ****.

Cut it with some Farecla or old school T Cut and it will shine. You could add a bit more thinner to it and play with your pressure and distance on the other wheels. Cellulose does dry quickly and what you are buying there is only 50% paint which is probably why it is cheap.

It's still too cheap IMO. I pay 35 a litre for quality cellulose, so half a litre of that alone is still double that price before you even start with adding thinners.

T-Cut will bring out some shine, but it will still have a lot of orange peel. If you already have some laqcuer by all means try and flat it then put lacquer on top. But if you have to buy lacquer you may as well just buy a tin of decent paint in the first place. It may be a bit difficult to flat without breaking though because of all the curves.

Yeah, Think I'll just use this stuff as a crappy colour coat for things, nothing important.

I'll wait a couple weeks and go to an auto jumble where there's a paint stand there with all the proper paint supplies and stock up on quality stuff.

I'll give the wheel a quick nib down with 2000 eventually and see if I can flat it out slightly. I use meguiars compounds and I've just got myself a mini air polisher so should be able to get into the wheel gaps.
