First TIG welds, really thin

Hi,
I'm just putting down the first tig welds onto steel box, no filler and the weld puddle looks very thin. I'm using a Parweld XTT212P, 65A, 1.6mm tungsten. I'm going onto mild steel, 2mm wall 25mm box section. Could I ask for some feedback?

More amps needed I'd say 80 to 100amps, I've found this chart on the miller site useful.

More amps and a filler rod, autogenous and mild steel not recommended I seem to remember.

Thanks both, seems like spot on with every point! Current up to 90A and using a cleaner bit of steel is coming out much better, and trying some filler rod now. The pointers are really appreciated, bit of a change from MIG...

are you using the torch negative,
Earth clamp positive?

Running down the area of the joint with a flap disk or grinding disk, until it's shiny, shiny will help.

But you're getting there...

I was sure, and have just had to check again. I am apparently, and am in DC mode

Cheers, will have to get used to a bit more prep than I usually get away with. And yeap, time and practise! Literally the first evening, so not expecting them to look great at the moment!

Looks to me like your adding the filler rod too early and using the arc to melt the rod before the base metal is melted.
What you should be doing is adding the rid to the molten puddle ie. using the puddle to melt the filler rod. Try practicing on some thicker metal until you get the hang of doing this.

Cut through your photo in post #4 with a pair of scissors about 1/3 from the bottom and show us an end view of the weld. Turn it over and show us the back of the photo. Both of these views will help you greatly.
