*First Time Spraying Topic*

Hi,

My names Paul and currently run a Tyre Fitting Centre. For the past several months I have been very keen to learn how to prep and spray paint cars as thought this would be a good hobbie and very handly skill to learn so after watching countless hours on youtube and seeking information from this website and forums I thought I would invest alittle to see how I got on.

From Aersol Can's I did this at work one day when I was bored -

Now I know there's lots of mistakes thats why I am keen to learn how to put this correct, firstly I didn't remove the old paint and just sprayed primer on top of old paint :-( The Paint doesn't have much of a good shine so I'm going to take it back and respray the whole car after I come back from Holiday in a fortnight.

For the time being I have going to be completing certain tasks on a Taxi that we have, was quoted £648.00 to remove the rust and laquar peel throughout the whole taxi so thought I'd try myself first.

So far the materials I have:

High Build Primer
Standard Thinner
Cellulose Gloss Black Paint
Cellulose Gloss Thinner
Strip & Clean Pads
G3 Compond Paste
Wax
Masking tape
Water trap
24Litre 1.5Hp Compressor
Mini Gravity spray gun is on ordered and will have on Monday.

Items still require:

Respirator mask
Sander Base/320/600/800Grit Paper
Paint Stripper
Polisher

I think thats all I need to carry out the work, well I hope so lol. I'll update this topic with photo's of work that I have done before and after and maybe yous can all help and discuss on any problems that I come across.

you dont have to remove old paint if its sound all it needs is flatting

I didn't flatting it as to be honest I wasn't sure what it was untill I seen a video on youtube lol

If you don't flat it back to provide a key, the new paint won't adhere properly. You need to use progressively finer grades of paper to end up with a dull finish with no sanding marks in it. Even the slightest mark will show through the new paint and will mean extra work while finishing it.
Another thing is that tiny little compressor will be a nightmare for spraying, the tank is way too small.
Even a 50 litre one is hard going as paint spraying uses a lot of air.


Oh and imho, the focus looked much better before.

reminds me of cars that were on the road when i was a kid , the underseal line crept up the car as it got older covering more and more rot

24ltr comp isnt really suitable , its about capable of a door bottom or similar although if its all can afford you might struggle along

It's going to be a huge pain with that small a comp - not just the tank, but the small motor. Would be just about OK for bike bits - I've got one exactly like that in one shed. No use on a car though.
If it was like the Aldi 24 litre / 2.5hp, it would still be a pain but lots better as they refill very fast (but make such hot wet air).

Re sanding, it totally depends on what yr doing and what paints yr using, but to finish before compounding you'll want finer grades that you have there.

Gloss black takes no prisoners, shows every ripple and scratch, but you could look at it as a learning tool too..

As the others have said but also you don't paint cars with a minigun

I traded in the current compressor and got a Air Wolf 2.5Hp but still 24litre today not great but it's a start.

Won't a mini spray gun be good for small jobs eg rust spots etc?

mini gun is suitable for a bumper corner or bottom of a door etc
