I've been setting fire to things in my shed practicing my first welds.
Material is around 1.5mm and I'm using a Clarke 100E with co2.
The first load I did didn't penetrate at all seemingly regardless of power setting - so I experimented first with different speeds, and tried some with it slowed right down.
I waited until the weld pool changed to a different tone and then pushed that along. It didn't seem to bring any greater penetration though. When I went slower still the pool changed to a very flat darker tone that seemed to be collapsing, with the next step being blowing through.
So the next thing was trying with different angles and distances. I think I had been holding the torch at too much of an angle - things improved after moving it more upright, though I seem to now be either having all the weld on the top or underneath.
But it's progress and also I seemed to be able to work at much lower power settings.
One other thing is that the wire speeds suggested in the manual are all madly fast - reassuring in loads of spatter and the torch being pushed away.
Any how - here's what I'm at at the moment, any help greatly appreciated.
