fitting new electrode holder

evening to you all,

i've just bought a new electrode holder for a cheap buzzbox and it has a small sheet of copper about an inch square in the package with the cable clamp. i'm guessing it's to wrap round the bare end of the cable before putting it into the clamp but if anyone knows better what its purpose then please enlighten me.

You are dead right there, thats what its for.

Some fittings come with a preformed very thin copper tube to suit.

cheers Hitch i can fit it tomorrow now. it's a good welder sometimes, seems to depend on the metal, or maybe it's me. old stuff in difficult positions it welds pretty good, bizarrely. put two new, clean bits in front of it and it stutters a bit. needed to replace the croc clip holder though as it wouldn't release the dog ends anymore.

The ones i have fitted always come with the little copper tube or a small radiused strip.
If you need to swap it over when the cable becomes worn, you can use a small strip of copper pipe as a replacement as the allen screw normally mashes up the bit of copper such that it can't be used again.

I used a piece of 8mm microbore central heating pipe instead of the piece of copper. It crimped with grub screws onto the end of the bared copper wire.

Anneal it first to soften it so it squashes rather than cracks or breaks.

you can use odds and ends of copper pipe as big crimp cable ends as well. flatten the last 20mm of pipe and drill it out to suit the terminal. put the cable in the non-flattened end and crimp. you can flux it, heat it up and pour solder down there as well if you want to really get a good connection on high current stuff.
