I started servicing my mothers Hayter lawn mower at the weekend. It has a briggs and stratton engine on it. There is a bit of gunk in the sump that isn't draining out easily. Can anyone see any issues with filling the sump with diesel, rotating the crank to mix and draining? Will probably then re-fill with oil, run up so its warm and drain and refill again. Any problems doing this or any other suggestions?

It's about all you can do but just rotating the crank is not going to do that much as the only stirring will be by a splashing gear driven off the cam. I would be inclined to leave out the diesel but and just give it a couple of oil changes (detergent SAE30) getting it good and hot between them.

why loosen the crap and slosh it round your engine .if it isn't moving leave it. just run it till hot and tip out the oil

An engine will run perfectly ok with 30% engine oil and 70% diesel especially at idle, causing no damage, for a short period, in fact a lot are running around the roads with that ratio without anybody knowing because of pump seals leaking! you only have to look at a two stroke with only a sniff of oil in it
