Fly press identification

I'm looking on fleabay for a fly press and saw this:

It looks a bit like a sweeney and blocksidge number two, but I'm a bit confused by the offset support arm at the front. I can't find a picture or mention of another one like it and was just wondering if anyone else has any ideas?

Well you can see why it's been done but my guess is it's a failed experiment or made for a specific application.

That support would drive you nuts for general use.

Righto. Thanks for that screwdriver, I was being lured into ignoring it's foibles by the price! I'll save my pennies for a bit longer.

On the topic of presses, back at school we had a fly press tool which was a block with dovetailed rails in, these rails took little metal letters for stamping metal tags and labels etc. Does anybody know what the tool is called? My Google searching is not being met with much success.

Hi, Could it be for a home workshop with restricted space or for doing bigger work above it's smaller build size?

Seen a few used to be used with production tooling, especially with small parts. The design allows more power in a smaller form. Very important when used in a building with maybe 50 odd each with an operator.

Not much use if you want to notch the corners of a big sheet though. We used fly presses at a boiler factory I worked in and that would have been too restrictive for a lot of the jobs we did on them. It must have been for a heavy job with the top weight and the reinforcing like that, we used to punch 5mm plate with them.

The £45 start price was the deciding factor I think, it's ended at not much more. I don't want one I worked on them on piece work and think they are an instrument of the devil

Hmm. Another weird S&B press. Looking at this one and the way the additional support would fit, I am convinced this is to support the body for use when pulling rather than pressing. The extra support looks like it just rests in the bottom hole so I assume the support has a screw collar at the top to stop the head from bending down. Also I note the ram has threaded holes to accept attachments.

Standard Birmingham jewellery quarter blanking presses, I have a few of them, one the same as the original ebay link, one the same as above. Don't cut it off with a grinder, that's sacrilege...
