As per title. Unused for years and the chuck won't turn, totally seized. So how to get it apart? I have visions of undoing the wrong thing and dropping all the balls from the quill bearing, which would be an oops!

Just to be clear, it is the chuck that will not open or closed, right? And not the whole spindle that is seized?

Fill a baked bean tin with diesel, submerge the chuck in it. Leave for one week. After that, gentle tapping on the outside of the chuck with a nylon hammer while trying to move it with the chuck key.

High tech solution: replace bean tin with ultrasonic cleaner and reduce time to two cycles.

They are easier to dismantle when removed from the spindle. See:

There is a female taper in the top of the chuck and a male one on the end of the spindle. Only tightness holds it on. I have had problems with it dropping off when using milling cutters but I guess a thin forked taper wedge between quill and chuck would be the ideal thing to remove one.

Two perfect answers. It was getting the chuck off to begin with that had me confused. I hadn't even thought about dismantling it yet! Many thanks!

I have a ball joint splitter that i have ground down to make thinner for stubborn chucks..never failed me yet. this type

As it happens, my buddy across the yard has an ultrasonic cleaner, so first step is getting a wedge in and knocking the chuck out, and then it should be easy. Famous last words!

Careful use of 2 thin cold chisels can also shift them.

I've got some wedges, could post if you need them, hot air gun (HOT) helped a lot dropping mine, diesel soak is a good idea once off and easier to deal with seizure issue.

Like this - used on my old Marlow milling machine - Jacobs wedges slightly modified to fit.
