Foot pedal / Tig welder advice pls

Hi all

I’ve a Parweld XTT 220 AC/DC pulse Tig welder and parweld foot pedal...

My Q is this..

When the torch is directly connected to the machine I can adjust all the parameters..

But when I connect the pedal to the machine I can only adjust slope pre and post..

I fully understand that this is what the pedal is for eg to increase and decrease current..

But if I want to use for example pulse, I have to connect the torch, adj everything then remove it again and connect the pedal again before use.. also any re adjustments I have to go through it all again.. annoying..

I ask, is this the norm or am I missing something here..

This is the first unit I’ve had with a pedal tbf and the instruction books are as good as useless..

I have the Xti with their pedal and has seen the same with pulse settings. Press the pulse button several times and it will kick in.

You should be able to limit max amps with the pot on the pedal, if it's still there.

How low current can your machine output with pedal connected?
Mine won't go lower than 10 amps and that's considered quite good ,acc to a local service tech, for this machine with pedal.

Slope up/Down is disabled on mine with pedal connected but that's what you have it for

This is the exact reason i sent it back. its a silly design...

Sounds very similar to my thermal arc but as I made my own pedal I added a switch to disconnect the potentiometer in the pedal. This then allows me to adjust settings without disconnecting the pedal

I did exactly the same. The tweco is a similar set up so I made a remote which allows me to switch the pedal on and off. I also put a socket on the remote to allow me to have the torch switch and pedal plugged in and the same time and just flick the switch to swap between the torch and pedal.

It’s not clever mate. On your pedal pot you’ve got 3 cables. Pot high, low and wiper. The machine senses there is a remote from the wiper. So you break into that core and fit a switch. Bingo. Pedal on/off. The socket is a 2 pin amphenal and you have a switch on your pedal and torch that both use the same pins from the machine so I just tapped into the two switch wires from the pedal and fit a socket so my torch switch can also be connected.

its Just a toggle switch I picked up at some point and had kicking around.
They are cheap enough and easy enough to obtain. You’ll probably find them for a couple quid on eBay.

Won't work on the parweld. If you you insert the switch in-line to disconnect the pedal without actually unplugging it, switching the pedal back on with automatically revert back to the amps the dial on the pedal is already set to, over riding the setting you input on the panel by switching the pedal on and off.

It's a little late but only today I saw this post. I bought a welder that looks like parweld XTT. I imagine they both have the same Chinese origin. However so far (1.5 years of use) it has proved to be a reliable machine.

About the pedal and its operation with the machine the same bad features are found in this. But in the manual of my machine there is a topic talking about an internal dip switch and some relation to the operation of the pedal. It is not clear enough, but I decided to take a chance.

I removed the top cover of the machine, there is a dip switch and position 5 was ON in my machine. I put it OFF and ...

1) The maximum current control of the pedal can now be done on the machine panel in the normal way without the use of the external potentiometer on the pedal.

2) In DC, using pedal, now the minimum current becomes 5A and not 10A.

Disadvantages:

1) With a direct torch (without pedal) the 2T / 4T control does not work. I do not use it anyway.

2) With a direct torch (without pedal) the amperage adjustment is unstable because there is no resistive pedal potentiometer reference.

For disadvantage 2, I believe it is necessary to make a resistive divider within the torch connector simulating the fully depressed pedal. Still the working current could be adjusted on the panel. I have not tested it yet but it should work. I will test as soon as the extra pins arrive for the torch connector (which only has the trigger pins)

If out of warranty could you not fit a switch in place of the dip switch and place the switch somewhere on the outside?

Yes, it is possible. But I think a couple of resistors inside the torch connector is less intrusive without changing the machine.
But your idea would solve the 2T/4T problem also.
