Just a few pics of the project so far. Plenty of work to be done yet but Ill get there eventually.

I plan to fabricate new sills for the bottom of the cab plus the other long list of repairs to it! Recently bought this cebora 180 mig.

Years ago where I worked had a 4600 as a scraper tractor, the boss was a giant and decided the Q cab was too small so chopped it off above the mud guards with the stihl saw. Shame really, would be a classic now

Can I ask why you have sprayed over all the bolt heads? would the paint get damaged if you have to undo them?

I have a 4600 with a Q cab that I fitted my hedge cutter to. Sadly a bit of rot in the usual places, and really I need to pull the cab off and repair it properly, but time doesn't yet permit it

Nice tractor, will look well when finished. Always liked Ford tractors, does yours have the strange gearbox pattern some Fords have?

Looks like the tin worms have been busy on the cab, would it be easier to source a sounder replacement? Or do they all rot like MF 600 series cabs. If you are set on restoring that cab I would suggest you get it sand blasted first as that will show you better what needs replaced or patched. It also saves a lot of prep before welding.

Noticed you are using a gas heater. Not recommended for painting as they produce a lot of water as a by product of combustion and moisture is your enemy when painting.

Which if I remember correctly from previous reading, tells you it is illegal to repair tractor cabs by welding !

Some more work done at the weekend. Resprayed the chassis and a few other bits including the fuel tank. I'm moving on the replacing bushings and bearings on the front axle this weekend. The front chassis was rebored and bushed for the king pin.

. There was alot of play in the front axle, the two half king pins are also been replaced. I resprayed the bolt heads as I didnt see the need to mask them off.

That sounds like endless hardship no thanks! 15 kg's of wire went into that cab after including two 8x4 sheets of 3mm plate believe it or not. Was the most time consuming part including the doors. Would have been quicker building one from scratch to be honest!

Nice job! What prep work did you do to the engine? I'm planning on painting by David brown at some point but I'm not really keen on sand blasting it because I think sand will end up everywhere it shouldn't be!

I basically used an old spray gun filled with petrol to degrease the engine. I then used a wire cup in a drill and brush to clean up the engine. Everything including injector pipes, power steering pump were taken off for cleaning. I also used sand paper and paint thinners to give everything a final clean. I used water based degreaser at the start but found petrol far more effective.

That sounds good!! Did you sand back between coats or anything because I imagine that would be an absolute nightmare!

I did using a fine sand paper in places were it needed it. It's only after the primer I done this. Once this is done your finishing coats will be perfect. Also an air gun was great for blasting the grease and dirt off the block after the petrol spray.

Dear Bob, I remember when the 10 series was first introduced! It hardly seems possible that they're now old enough to need properly restoring! I ran a fleet of 600 6610's in Indonesia. They were cabless, and they had a very strange column gear change, but they worked well enough, except for tedious battery problems caused by putting the battery on top of the engine, which also meant using special imported hella batteries, which were hellish expensive. Cured both problems by putting a bracket on the loader mounting points and sitting the batteries on that. Ford later copied the design for their tropical tractors, I was quite chuffed!
