Found an arc welder down the tip

Paid £1 for it and it works score! It's an Esab Bantam, it became apparent that it was thrown out because the little bar that tells you the amperage doesn't work. I'm going to open it up tomorrow to find out what is wrong, could somebody tell me how they usually work?

The welder goes down to 23a what do you think is the thinnest steel I could get away with?

a quid! worth more than that as scrap, if it works, bonus. Just did a google, doesnt look a bad toy
