we have a similar type in work except instead of rams it uses a threaded rod each side. can only be wound up without load on It though

You would certainly get plenty of exercise walking between each ram working on your own!

probably should have mentioned, the one we have has a chain block on it, the adjustment of the gantry height is merely for clearance issues

Yes Mobile cranes have locking pins in the booms. You just can't see em.

Also, Cylinders on cranage are usually are fitted with over centering valves, this means that full pressure is required on one side of the cylinder before the oil is allowed to leave the other side of the cylinder. Protects against un intended movement in the case of a burst hose, overloaded cylinder running away etc

like the idea but it does look to have very little side ways support, it would worry me, but then i like to over engineer things at times

I stand corrected on the crane front. Still a lot of hydraulic equipment doesn't have any sort of back up.

bit i like is you can use it on a angled steped ground
just use one jack to level the beam then use chain hoist

that would be better with a winch system to raise the gantry instead of the rams and use pins to lock off it would be able to raise higher, they make wind up tripods for stage trussing easily lifting 400 kg
