I've got an 80s Lancia Beta (cue all the old rust jokes) that recently stopped on me due to the fuel filter getting clogged with fragments of rust. I've thought about buying a job lot of fuel filters and changing them on an annual basis, but to be honest I really need to stop the problem at its source - the rusty fuel tank.
From what I've gathered, reading here and on other sites, it will need a 3-stage process to make sure the job is done once and done right:
1. Remove the rust and scale from inside the tank using citric acid solution or similar.
2. Coat the de-rusted interior of the tank with a rust inhibitor such as Fertan, Vactan or similar
3. Seal the inside of the tank with a product such as GTS1750 http://www.caswelleurope.co.uk/gastank.htm or similar
Is this the correct procedure, or are there better ways of achieving the same ends? Also, what products would people recommend for the above 3 stages?
