fusion 360 help (first go)

my nephew was good with 3d design stuff back when I had my first printer, and my little brother used to do that stuff for a living so I always let them draw up what I needed

new printer now so figure it's time I learn, first go running fusion 360..

I've drawn up what I need, but can't get it to export to 3d print

selection button, draw a box around everything... then I'm stuck?

I'm googling but it's not much help... is this a fusion 360 problem or does it do that if there's a problem with your model?


also... mu model... some of the sides arn't sides

I'm trying to use the patch tool to fix that, but there's one side where when I click it (the top highlighted line) instead of selecting that side it selects around the corner down the side and along the bottom?


again... google not helping.... is 360 updated a lot? most of what I find it for old versions that are different now?

Replies to your other post.

But essentially forget right click it's the file menu left click.
Then left click export. Scroll down to STL

You need to create a body....that's a solid object usually created by extruding 2D sketches.

Yes Dale is right. Looks like no body.
But if you have done that with a sketch you are better than me. Lol

It looks like you have extruded something though.

I am interested to see what (if any) export options you get in the file menu and export.

if was the only way I could get the slant in the middle to work

I drew this in FreeCAD in about 30 seconds and exported an STL. Imported that to Prusa Slicer, sliced it and here we go.

Sketch a tall rectangle, and then a line from bottom left corner to half way up the right hand side.

End sketch

Extrude both profiles (the rectangle) to form one of the end 'blocks'

Now extrude the triangle starting from the extruded face of the cube for half it's distance.

Mirror the whole thing

Alternatively extrude triangle for full length then extrude another rectangle.

Try Design Spark Mechanical too. It is the only one that seemed to work logically and not require me to sit in front of a lot of daft videos before I could draw the basics.

There are many ways to skin a cat... Much depends on what dimensions you have and what the intent of the design is.

I've quickly recorded the video below showing *one* way of doing it, knowing nothing about the part or its purpose:

Note that I wouldn't normally select most things from the menus, but have done so here for clarity (I'd normally use keyboard shortcuts: L = line, R = rectangle, D = dimension, etc.)
Note, also, that the lines in each sketch are black when it is completed - blue lines are unconstrained and can come back and bite you.

(ETA: I don't do 3D printing, so there was no software installed for F360 to send the design to at the end.)

Further to the above, this is a very simplistic way of creating the same part - just build a stack of shapes. It's the way that (I guess) most of us started and it gets the job done:

FreeCAD is good, as is OnShape Free. Steer clear of DesignSpark Mechanical: they charge you for some of the most fundamental / essential features, like exporting STEP files.

For some of us, STEP files are far from essential. For printing, all you need is an .stl option.

Yep, I'm frantically finishing a 2D drawing today as tomorrow they cancel all versions except version 6, which means I won't be able to save a 2D drawing as a dxf without paying £10 a month. Or, since I need to run it on a laptop too, £20 a month. Really not happy!

Nothing wrong with @Misterg method, assuming the part is symmetrical along it's length this is how I'd do it:

Draw rectangle with diagonal line - I haven't dimensioned or constrained (hence some blue lines) since I don't know detail dimensions...

Finish sketch and extrude the rectangle both ways symmetrically...

Next extrude the portion to be cut out, and job done...

came home to this, might be a slight delay while I sort it out :-(




cable tie holding the wiring to the extruder came off, wires dropped down and caught the print


printer cut out when it lost connection to the hot end temp sensor... so I'll have to sort that out first :-o

I started to learn to use DesignSpark several years ago, and slowly put together some basic models. Fast forward nearly a year of being too busy for fun, and I was locked out, and just could not get access again.

Shame, because I was getting on ok with it.

That can happen to any piece of software, look at doing a new install, there is a new version out now and it will still open the older files.
