Anyone had a series Landy bulkhead galvanised? Wondering how to keep the door hinge inserts loose in the door pillars. W/A

Remove the hinge nuts & replace after galvanising. If you get new ones be careful, mine were very brittle and the springs snapped.
I ended up making my own devices for holding the hinges, I'll see if I can find some pics.
I think the biggest problem will be preventing the bulkhead from warping.

Thanks rtbcomp, got the bulkhead back from Medway Galvanizers - good job. Slight distortion to the footwell panels, otherwise looks good. Put greased screws in the top hinge plates, will probably have to apply a little heat to release the plates. I will update when junior starts re-assembly. As I sent it in with another job it worked out about £30 to galvanise. W/A

That's 30 quid well spent!
This is my fixing plate, excuse the grotty welding!
It's a nut welded to each end of a steel strip (drilled to allow the screw to pass through!). A cabletie is passed through a hole in the centre of plate and a piece of plastic, slightly bigger than the rectangualr hole in the A-post and drilled in the centre is passed over the cabletie.
This is the part in place
A head cut from another cable tie is used to retain the plastic and fastener in place, do not overtighten the cabletie because you'll need to be able to move the hinges to get the door to fit.
The metal was blathered in Waxoyl, and the plastic & cabletie are hidden behind the hinge, don't forget a new gasket between the hinge & A-post.

Well it's not fitted yet, but it looks good. A lot of the distortion in galvanizing is dependant on how it's dipped. If it was put in flat it would come out like a banana, so a lot depends on the company and skill of the 'dipper'. I was a bit worried when it came back strap banded to a pallet with a load of durbar plate on top, but the straps were not tight and all seems well. My experience of galvanisers is things generally either come back OK or totally wrecked, not much in between! W/A
I know the vent panels are expensive now but they don't look right without them. Don't think I'd risk having one galvanised either.
Bottom section maybe, you can build that out of heavier section than the original no problem.

I know of a really horribble ltwt, has thick pile carpet and a pinkmetallic paintjob. Apart from looking pretty disgusting the first thing that hits you is no vents.
When I bought my ltwt craddocks wanted almost 300inc vat for the upper panel. last I heard it was around £500+vat.
I will have to make one this year, the rust is very bad.

Is that a series III or series III ltwt?
You can buy new defender bulkheads and they only need slight alteration to put on a series III. So a landy parts man was telling me, at the time[2 years ago] a defender bulkhead was £180.
I was going to make the tooling to press the vent panel. I was also going to make the rams[three rams] to go with the press, haven't made the press yet either;-) Anyone gotany spare seals for 50mm bore ram tube?
One of the military suppliers do have the lower bulkheads made, they get a batch done a few times a year. I have no idea why they haven't had the upper panel done, a bloke on one of the landy forums made a few.
I went to collect something I bought off ebay and the blake had a new vent panel hanging on the wall, seemed he was recovering a debt and he got pallet loads of vent panels, which he flogged to paddocks and bearmach for £20 each. He kept one in case he ever gets a ltwt;-)

It was a SIII.
I don't think the did the upper panel because it would have been too expensive and people would prefer to make their own versions.
Rebuilding Landrovers isn't the same as doing vintage Bugattis, we tend to prefer driving and abusing them and we are almost all skint.
