is there a standard prep process for galvanizing
the reason I ask is we have farm gates made of extremely thin piping 40yrs old outside since the day they were bought not a spec of rust
if I bought a galvanized farm gate today how much of it would be left in 10yrs time ?
was I sending something for galvanizing how would I get the same quality of galvanizing as the 40yr old gate ?

might not be the galvanizing - could be that the 40 y/o gate was made out of something other than mild steel?
I don't think I've seen anything galvanised that wasn't in very good shape after ten years, except where welds have fatigued and opened up
It could be the new gates have rubbish welds which crack and allow moisture behind the galvanising

its definately galvanised
not sure about the mild steel bit
this example wouldn't be limited entirely to gates, these ESB pylons which are up to 50yrs old are still standing with the galvanized as good as new

By no means the only galvanising firm in the country, but have a look here, check the 'knowledge bank'
Sometimes our customers will specify that the material is shotblasted to a certain spec before galvanising, i guess to ensure no mill scale etc can come off over time and reduce the bond of the galv coating, just a guess though.
95% of the time though, fabrications intended for galvanised will just be from mill finish stock.
