Garden Arches

Been busy'ish as NZ is out of lock down. I got a commission to make three arches for a garden:


Got the parts cut out of corten sheet 2.5mm

Then started the assembly:


Curved all the flat plate with my roller bit of a bugger getting the ends of each piece but got there in the end.
Yes I use a cooker hood as a fume extractor.

Next parts:
All tack welded using BOC Smoothcore gasless mig. ( Settings 0.8mm 13V 3m/m )
I have two stacked on each other here used the first one to support the next, made the layout much easier.


Took me about 10 hours to get each one set out and welded as near perfect as I could they are less than 2mm out of a perfect circle so pretty pleased with that.

Then the rest of them:


They weigh in at 66kg each.
All loaded up: I did tie them down before I drove off.

Then the installation: 2 foots each arch 1m x 40cm x 40cm about 400kg of concrete each so 800kg per arch dont want them falling over if we have an earthquake. Then 8 x 50cm x m10 galvanised rods as fixings, with 40 mm square washers welded on each to stop them pulling out the concrete. Let the concrete set for a week so it was nice and hard
Still have to bury/hide the footings but I like to re-tighten the bolts as they stretch, after a week.


Customer very pleased, and I can safely say I don't want to make these again, so much welding.

Used 6kg of GS gasless mig wire for all three. Works better than mig + gas for some reason, it rusts / blends in really quickly.

Forgot to say: Arches are 2.1m internal dia 2.3m external dia. a 1.2m cut out for the walkway, with a 100 x 100mm section.



Managed to all three arches out of 2 sheets ( 1.25m x 2.5m x 2.5mm corten) more welding but less sheets.
