garnet?

How long does Garnet last, someone told me it's better than ali oxide?
It's to blast steel parts that are being painted, I am just about to paint a few bike[the peddle sort] frames and thought I need some new media..

One of the Powder coating companies I use, use Garnet. They never clean out the blast room, as the stuff still cuts when almost dust, after that, the extractor gets rid.

I am using old, could be 20 year old, aluminium oxide[ok it's much older than that if you want to be picky]. I bought a couple of bags and there is a few kg left, it still cuts.
Someone told me Garnet was harder than ali oxide, I thought it was the same and I wasn't sure harder was better?
Then I looked online and found a listing saying it was OK for one or two times thru the gun!
I suppose I will just buy some and see what it's like. I am tempted by j-blast or glass.

j blast can be used twice but after that u end up hurtling a load of soot and dust about it will clog up the reg valve and blast hose and be dificult to regulate as well as wont cut eficiently

I thought garnet was softer and as you say harder isn't necessarily better... it's the way the grains fracture i.e. do they blunt/break up into smoother pieces or do they fracturre in a way that makes them 'self sharpening'. Not a clue with regards to blasting but garnet is the abrasive of choice for water cutting although that might be more to do with things like clogging or surface finish?
