Gas torch for heating

after watching doubleboost's video on wheel bearing

and being told in the thread its a Bullfinch torch.

i was wondering can these type of torches run on butane.

or even these ones here and here.

the reason i ask is....... i have an oxy/propane torch, hoses, regs and arrestors etc

and even have the two bottle's

but not able to use them residentially..

so pretty pointless me keeping all the gear and the bottles stored elsewhere.
if i cant use them.
but found them very handy for heating things up or to free something thats stuck.
like john does in the video above....

now im told i can have a calor gas bottle for a calor gas fire. if you have the calor fire.

i have a calor fire with a 13kg calor bottle. its blue bottle and butane AFAIK

so i was hoping i could run one of those torches of the butane bottle when needed....

or are they propane only.......

yeah if you can get a 4 bar regulator you should be ok. you'll probably be ok using a 2 bar regulator (thats what I run my sievert torch on). but if you use butane in cold conditions, you may not get enough pressure for it to operate correctly, but it will work, it'll just appear like you're running out of gas. the instructions say 4 bar for the regulator

I lifted the tamper proof cover off my fixed pressure butane regulator and 'tampered' with the adjusting screw to give me more pressure, it was better but not as good as propane.

Ive tried this too as I have a glut of nearly full butane bottles. Don't bother wasting your time as the flame produced is no bigger than a lighter.

If you want a sensible heat source then propane is the only way to go

@doubleboost , john what size propane bottle do you have your torch running from.?

i see they do a 3.9kg bottle, ideal size to tuck out the way, but how long would that last on a torch.


i guess the other way to approach this is.....

buy a gas BBQ, then i need a propane bottle to use with it

and i can use said bottle with BBQ and gas torch...

so out of the two torches i posted above with would be better.

my thought it the one with the 48mm nozzle ?

I have a 47 Kg bottle for the furnace I just use that
Any size propane bottle will give the same result

i did ask local stockist today if possible to swap one for a smaller cylinder.
they said i can swap a 19kg for a smaller cylinder. 12 or 13kg , 6kg or 3.6kg..
but i wouldn't be able to swap a smaller one back for a larger one.

it will make it easier to store a smaller cylinder,

but the price between them is mad.
£14.99 for a 3.6kg refill.
£20.49 for the 6kg refill
£26.99 for the 19kg refill.

i guess it does pay to have the bigger cylinder.

Luckily there is a garage on my route where the pump is on its own at the far side of the forecourt but I know what you mean.

Sorry that's a typo, should be 48p a litre not 46p but it's still cheap, they seem to price it at 1/2 of whatever petrol is.

well this has now been sorted, after doing some searching on ebay and then preloved and then gumtree.

i came across this very local for £15. BARGAIN !!



the lady selling it was advertising the stuff for her dad. who has retired,
local plumber, had three of these i think and a set of benders.

What make of cylinder was that?
Have just changed a Shell cylinder at Mark 1 Hire this week and 19Kg Propane was £33.60 inc vat.
Will have to have a phone round suppliers.
