Gas Torch

This has probably been done a millions times before, but I have an old but brand new SIF Demon O/A torch. It's never ever been used and still has original outer card board box.

With all the correct regulators, hoses and flash back arresters can it be used for general purpose heating, soldering and brazing applications with oxygen and propane

Any help muchly appreciated

you will need different nozzles for cutting with oxy propane but apart from that you should be good to go. Propane and acetylene flash back arrestors are the same, hoses should be a different colour but that is just a visual safety thing i think. I use a cutting torch for everything with oxy propane but due to the amount of oxy it uses i have just reverted back to straight propane for most applications now

Thanks Brokenbiker, I have the correct blue and orange hoses, flashbacks and regulators. I will never use this for cutting, but only light duty heating, soldering and brazing. Whole kit is for occasional use only so I don't expect to get thro too much oxy

should be good to go. I think i was going through about 4 times more oxy than propane, which is why i stopped using oxy. Propane is just as good for brazing if you have a few breeze blocks to trap the heat

Hi guys.

My boss has been looking for a while at oxy propane as an alternative to oxy acetylene. Main reason is total cost to fill both bottles. Is the difference in oxy usage as stated above likely to offset the difference between the cost of propane and acetylene?

So, I now have a Hi Lo No3 shank, proper regs for both gases, all the correct flash back arresters, a set of hoses fitted with check valves, bottle of oxygen and bottle of propane, just waiting for the mixer and nozzles to go on the torch and we are ready to have some high temperature fun

I have checked with a number of different sources and must report that the colour of hoses is not a visual safety thing. Propane is a liquid and behaves very differently from any other gas found typically in a mech workshop. The rubber in propane hose is special in that it does not degrade. All hoses will work and carry gas but will be subject to degradation and sudden catastrophic failure, if the wrong one is used. Please only use the correct hose for the gas

you can also find propane hose in black, blue, yellow, orange, green and in sure ive seen red too depending on where you shop. The first set of propane hoses i bought were both black for oxy and propane, only difference was the threads on connectors. I only changed to orange and blue when i needed longer hoses

I'm sure you can get in any colour as long as they are rated for use with propane. Just wanna make sure people are safe with all THIER kit as I've seen the pictures of the aftermath when things go wrong. It's better to stay safe
