Gas Torch

Right chaps I have a Seivert gat torch , I know I need a 4bar regulator but not being au fait with gas cylinder types what type of regulator fits what please ,want to get a gas cylinder and regulator to get this going, intended use is hardening of small tools and chisels for woodworking ,

Going to need a propane bottle which has a female (left hand thread) fitting. The regulators with left hand threads are marked with a groove across the nut corners so that's easy to see. A 19kg should last you a decent time and i normally pay about £32 for a re-fill but your going to have to pay a bottle deposit (some places do) best place would be a roofing supplier yard as you could buy at trade prices. and the regs are about a tenner from ebay. If you need a few meters of pipe and couple of clips just let me know as i have loads

Hi thank you for that info , also for the offer of pipe , fortunately the torch has a couple of metres on it hopefully when I get this going it will only be for heating small sections of tool steel to bright red , doing it all on the cheap as am retired and on pension ,do like making woodworking tools , currently building a tool cabinet to house only my homemade hand tools again thank you ,

Starting with the hot end, what is the very last thing you have in the line?

As Roofman says, the regulator will have standard left hand POL fitting one end (buy one of the hand-cranked ones with a rubber end and you do not need a spanner). It will probably have a left hand BSP at the other end. We need to establish what is on your Sievert to see if it will fit.

Hi , here is a pic of the torch , has about a metre of pipe, it's a Seivert B2 , it looks to be a 1/8 bsp connector , Ihave made the assumption it will get a piece of tool steel 4x1x1/4 ins to bright red heat , ie inch chisel size ,,

Yea that will work and that bsp fitting should go right onto a regulator..introduce 2-5 psi of air into the line and it turns it into another animal but this is for another thread

I would think that will do the job nicely.
It would be worth keeping your eye out for some fire bricks to make a base and back wall with to contain some of the heat. Will heat the metal up quicker and save you some gas!
Old night storage heaters are a good source of them!

If you do up the umph with air then fit a flashback arrestor in the gas line as well!

Dont need oxy..just normal compressed air has fantastic results on heat output...good advice on firebricks

Hi , will lookout for firebricks re the compressed air I'm hoping the torch will do the job, Iwill be using gauge plate for the blades once hardened I will temper them in the kitchen oven ,again the hive mind here is great and also the very generous offers of free materials is uplifting in these difficult times .
I am lucky to live in a small hamlet and everyone is looking out for one another ,90 % of the residents are pensioners , I'm 70 soon and am fortunate enough to be in good health and am shopping for our elderly 80 plus neighbours , again thank you ,

Good luck and one final note...i have a Sievert fettish and have loads of torches and spares so if you need anything buddy just let me know via PM and its yours..Great job on looking after the older neighbors if i may say so.

flashback arestors aren't needed on propane not even flamefast torches with compressed air only oxy acet and oxy propane need them

the torch should be fine without using compressed air. if you do get some firebricks you can build up a "cave" like this to keep the heat in. you need the gap at the back to allow the combustion gases out. needs to go on a layer of firebricks too.

If you can, please check to see if it is left hand or right hand thread.

Also undo the hose off the torch and try to swap ends.

All the new Sievert stuff you find online now has BSP hose tails but the older stuff did not. Somebody, somewhere sells the correct adaptor but I cannot find it just now.

Worst case, you can lop off the fitting at the regulator end and put on a hose tail and fitting with LH BSP thread.

I have a gas torch which i have fitted a Y piece on the inlet..one side gas and the other to a small compressor with a regulator and pipe in air with the gas at 2-3 psi...You will be very surprised how much hotter the flame front becomes. Its not something new as you must of seen the road workers using a long lance type torch that sounds like a pulse jet and the shroud glows red hot while burning off old road markings, that is just propane and compressed air from a big towable rotary compressor...
