Gearbox gears

Have a trafic gearbox on the healing bench for a bearing replacement, unfortunately it's been caught just a little too late and has damaged 6th gear on the input shaft.

Approximately 75% of the teeth have been blootered, what I find bizarre however is that it's mating gear (nearest to the most failed bearing) is absolutely fine, no damage what's so ever.

Why would this be? Something to do with them being helical? Would they both be equally damaged if they were spur gears?

Has it been gouged by something away from the point where the gears mesh? Or could it be that the geartooth hardening wasn't too good. Or the misalignment caused by the failing bearing may have resulted in the top of the damaged gear tooth gouging into the land of the other meshed gearwheel.

Think I might have a gearbox in the stash though, cant remember now if its 5 or 6 speed

I couldn't see anything else damaged or that could have caused the damage, the bearings on the input shaft were still intact, albeit worn.

The bearing on its mating shaft had collapsed so it almost certainly was causing a misalignment and ultimately the damage, I just find it bizarre how it's only damaged one of the pair.

I did wonder if perhaps the damaged gear had iffy hardening, it does seem quite "crumbly"

Can't deny, but was cheap.

Not to worry. A new 6th gear arrives Monday.

I briefely owned a renualt. One day I put it into reverse to park and the gearbox went bang, a very common problem apparantly, designed to fail!
