Generator enclosure ?

I a looking for a 2k-3kw genny for my power tools, 1700w grinder and Jigsaw etc etc

Now it will be left at my boat mooring as these are to big to keep draging them to home and boat.

So, is it ok to build a plywood/silenced enclosure around it, i am thinking if it will over heat. Is it a good idea to extend the exhaust to the outside ?

I am looking at the either new Clark PG2500 or second hand Honda EM 2300 or EM3000.

Err I wouldn't can lead to overheating and exhaust will definitely need to be place through the wood with a big hole unless it with set the wood alight.

I built an enclosure to house the genny at the stables, I put mesh covered holes in each side for airflow, the R/H one is by the exhaust. We have had the genny running for a few hours with the doors/lid closed and no overheating problems.

If you want to enclose it, need to think about inlets and outlets. Air intake/exhaust and cooling air in/out.

So long as you keep these flows unrestricted, and separate, all will be well.

Of course, in practice, it's hard to box things in without putting some restriction in. What's acceptable will depend!

That was the idea, but also sound insulation. The enclosure wont be small tight around it and hold tools aswell.


Yes it will have vent on the back side so the noise can go out towards the filed.

I could fit a 12v bilge blower when it running as a vent.

I built it that big to accommodate the battery, inverter etc. for the pilot lighting, although a couple of weeks later I found Mrs Robo decided it would be a good idea to store the spare plastic petrol cans in there they got relocated immediately

I cant decide between an oldish Honda EM3000 for £225 or this new Clark a sit has 12v output aswell for th ebilge blower

We've had a Hyundai HY3100LE in there for a few years, clocks up about 200 hours each winter and I service it annually, the AVR failed after a few hours, but they overnighted me a new one immediately and since then it's been no trouble (that's jinxed it )

my Honda 1900 ? still starts first time after many years of good service....
aint Clarke stuff just overpriced rebadged anyold Chinese gear.....?
besides with a Honda u can get the spares in any country anywhere.......wouldn't part with mine and the resale price is always good......

I’ve got a clarke 4.5kva, with AVR, I’m convinced it’s a honda rebadged as a clarke. To be fair it’s spot on and very reliable. About 7 or 8 years old, not sure what the newer machine mart ones are like though.

wouldn't worry about overheating. it wont get chance . the scrotes will pinch it if you leave it they nick em while you are using them at Grangetown Middlesbrough normaly have to have a massive chain on them even in daytime

That's what I was going to say, unfortunately it looks like a "steal me" box full of all your stuff! What about keeping it in a trailer and wheeling it to the boat when you need it?

Having serviced generators in a previous job I would go for a Honda all day long. It will reliably start even after sitting for ages with stale petrol & will last for years. The Clarke will be a rebadged Chinese unit with nowhere near the same reliability.

My Dad bought a Loncin Chinese genny, despite my warnings. It only gets used during power cuts or if you need to use a power tool out around the farm. It will only start on completely fresh petrol so after you use it you need to drain the fuel completely before storage. It's had 2 new carbs, both times caused by broken castings. The output voltage is not very steady so I wouldn't like to use it regularly as it would shorten tool life.

I have a honda generator got it second hand 35 years ago .never ran it for a year fuelled it up and it started 4th pull no bother

The 2nd one looks genuine, not sure about the top one. Some of the fake Chinese Honda's are very hard to spot, even for an experienced eye, that's why I would buy from a reputable dealer.
