generator voltage but no amps

Hi I hope somebody can throw some light on this (no pun intended) I have got hold of an old 6kva genset, batt start 110v 220v output driven by a fabulous lister diesel when it's running there is 220v shown on the multi meter when a small load ie 75w lamp is put on it's fine but put 500w halgoen on and both go out it will not run any load there is no sign of the lister slowing or even coming under load. there is a 12v charging circuit for the battery which I hav'nt checked as yet any thoughts would be most welcome.

Hi guys. I've got the same problem with my gen. It's a 6kva diesel gen. It pulls a drilling machine but the voltage totaly drops to 0 when i try the washing machine. Washing machine works on my other gen. And the motor doesn't make any attempt to raise or lower the revs
