Goggles steam up while wearing respirator-solution required.

While under the car (“new second hand”), cleaning off the small amounts of rust (in preparation for waxoyl). I’m using a flexi drive in a powered drill to get to the awkward areas, and have a selection of wire brushes to fit in the flexi-drive.

For the dust I’m wearing a respirator and goggles. After a short while the goggles steam up (even though there are vent holes in them) and I cannot see, plus, wearing glasses compounds the problems as they steam up too.

The only solution I could think of is to cut some larger vent holes in the sides of the goggles (dust may enter here). It would be good to have a one piece “all in one” mask incorporating breathing & eye protection, maybe like those for welding fumes-OTT? Any ideas please.

As I speak I have dust in my eyes as I could not use the goggles .

I used to rub a drop of washing up liquid on to the inside lens and then polish off with a nice soft tissue,Did the trick for quite a while.

I have this problem too. There are anti-fogging surface treatments for lenses, but I've not tried any.

I use a chainsaw helmet and (mesh) visor for some jobs, but that doesn't offer any protection against dust & grinding particles.

I've even thought about using a very gentle stream of compressed air to stop condensation.

I think the washing up liquid works on the same principal as the anti fogging stuff, It lowers the surface tension of the water droplets/mist and makes the drops flow out.

What sort of goggles are you using? I've used these for a good while now and they never steam up. The cheaper ones do tend to steam up.

I would check the fit of the dust mask. Sounds like its leaking up around the nose seal and into the goggles when you are breathing out. And if that's the case, dust will find it's way back in via same route when you breath in again. By the way, what type of mask are you using?

^^ This. If the mask doesn't fit/isn't fitted properly then anti-fogging stuff of any flavour will be of limited use. If it's a disposible mask then the valved ones are better with regards to misting issues. If your goggles/glasses only steam up when used with a respirator then it's a safe bet that the issue is with the mask

Personally i hate googles and tend to use a full face visor when safety specs alone won't cut it. They're also far less prone to steaming up

As I have to wear specs, I find a full face shield better than goggles and give better face protection when using wire wheels/brushes which throw out strands of wire
