This has been going on for some time, but I have adopted the usual professional solution, and turned the radio volume up. But its gradually getting worse.
About 18 months to 2 years ago, bearing in mind that the van only does about 3000 miles a year, I noticed a medium pitch "woo woo woo woo" sound at certain lowish speeds. Sounds like a worn wheel bearing if you have ever had one.
But anyway, its not that, but definitely the engine, and it occurs between 1500 and 1900 RPM. Will do it on the move or standing still, clutch up or down. So its not the gearbox either.
Engine has two belts. One, a ribbed flat belt, driven by the crankshaft, drives the water pump and alternator, and has a tensioner pulley. The other, a toothed belt under covers, drives the camshaft, the diesel injection pump, and the oil pump. Also has a tensioner and also an idler pulley .
So I removed the ribbed belt to try and isolate the noise, but it still happens, which leaves the cam belt stuff. This, along with the idler and tensioner pulleys was replaced with an INA/Schaffler kit about three years ago, but could it be this so soon ? As I said, it sounds like a run bearing, and if it is not this, this leaves the camshaft (unlikely) the oil pump (not a known failure point), or the diesel injection pump.
It does sound like its near the injection pump, but it difficult to pinpoint. If I take it to bits, I might as well fit a new Gates belt and pulleys kit while its apart, but has anyone ever had an injection pump make this sort of noise ? I have never come across it before.
Any other suggestions welcome, but no, I don't want to swap it for an EV, unless you are buying !
