Hello guys, been reading your post for a few days.
I'm a computer technician living in Montreal area of Quebec and have a leaning towards getting my hands a bit dirty. Recently took the plunge and bought a welder. Of course, I started reading up on welding about the same time I ordered my welder. They ad had said, gas or gasless, but, what do you know, when I get it, it's a gasless model. Not a big deal. Paid $160 CDN for it and it does do the job (not pretty) but I've been practicing and my welds getting cleaner.
My dad was a welder by profession, mostly with gas torches. I remember seeing those big 5 foot tanks in the garage with i was a kid. He used to make these fake wood ashtrays and lamps with beads faking the bark! I still have one there that weights a ton! I can imaging the work involved!
Turn out, it's like one of those SIP models everyone's got around here. Wire drive is the same, and I've already installed the wire roller mod even though it's still fairly new. And am looking into that PWM motor control mod, also, but not sure what transformer to get since we run on 115v over here.
One thing I was curious about.
What would stop someone from modding one of these "eBay specials" to gas?
I figure, those chinese manufacturers, they just have the same design for several models so maybe it's possible to add the gas fittings, gas solenoid and a new torch? Move the + and - to terminals inside the cover and voila! Gas or gasless!
Might look into it a bit more.
Getting great knowledge here. This is my primo welding site.
Anyways, time to go tweak my unmodded motor control resistor to slow down that factory wire feed speed!
