Grey fergie TE20 forum

One for all you farming types, looks like I'm going to be given custodianship of my dads '55 Ferguson TEA20. He bought this maybe 16 years ago but hasn't done much with it. It is a runner but will benefit from a bit of tlc, maybe a re paint. Not being of farming stock I don't know much about tractors but it's pretty basic and a bit like a classic car in maintenance and repair. Any suggestions for a decent forum dedicated to these little machines? This model has the low level exhaust running parallel with the bottom of the frame/engine. While original this does not look very 'tractory' to me and I'd probably want an upright like on later models, (I hear the rivet counters sharpening their spears and looking for fire lighting materials)

We had a grey fergie with a Perkins p3 in, didn’t go anywhere fast but it never failed to start

They did an under or sticky up exhaust depending on what its used for, the sticky up exhaust is what you want if your trundling over hay and stuff like that but the fumes do get blown in your face! In fact ive just put a 2 foot extension on my sticky up exhaust ready for hay making, its not a ferguson though

The low mounted exhaust is usally specified for orchard work. Many manufacturers did that.

here's mine,got ne pistons n liners plus a reground crank......had to throw it together for the trip here.....
also it's vinyard model....( narrow back end)

First tractor I ever drove a TVO one of these. Aged 4. Let loose harrowing corn.

TBH not one I hanker after now unlike the TVO DB 900 I loved soon after. That one still lives about five miles from here but he won’t sell it to me.

Father had a TE20 with downswept exhaust, which I used to drive when still in short trousers (quite a while before the ban on under-13s driving tractors). One day my bare leg came into contact with the hot exhaust while I was dismounting, and I bore the scar for years afterwards.

Some time around 1958 father traded it in for a diesel version with upright exhaust. On the first day he drove it into the little low shed where the Ferguson had always been stored, and you can probably guess the result. There was hardly a scratch on the exhaust pipe, and it was the manifold that snapped, so it was quite an expensive mistake. Thank goodness it was himself driving it.

Buy her a tractor. Can’t go wrong with a 6 pot Leyland or IH or maybe, the jury is yet out here as I have two untested in real life, BB or early Case.

would be the best ever ever present anyone would buy me ….. apart from a Cessna, a 4 master schooner, maybe a Cartier or a Van Gogh. Just kidding.

Friends of Ferguson Heritage (FOFH) is the best forum, gone a little quiet now due to facebook, but its the only one that has members from Massey Ferguson and originally backing from AGCO. Lots of rivalry between FOFH and the Ferguson club (but they dont have a forum...) Need club membership to access the forum though. It does keep the idiots out though and has a mass of honest technical info.

Low exhaust was factory standard, became an option after the massey harris merger, as did oversize tyre option. benefit if around low buildings, not so much if you're using a planter...

What year is it - can be dated by the plate on the dash or the casting date on the rear case, on the rhs.
Very early ones had a vertical oil filter. 6 volt up to 1951. (air cleaner vent on dash came in @12v introduction)
Many had TVO conversions which are not good for camshaft life...

I have 3 - early '47 TE20 with Continental engine, ( in bits unfinished) a '51 TE-D - my first restoration 35 yrs ago , and my Dads 1954 TE-F.

i have a road tow comp with a mint 3 cylinder perkins in . its 1950 and hardly done any work . starts 1st time even after 8 month with no cold start
