Hello all. Just splashed out on a new MIG with the intention of making a fence and gates for starters.
Discovered this forum today. Nice to know there are people out there for advice.
Thanks for the welcome. Now for the questions. I see wire on ebay, £14 for 15kg spool of 0.8mm + postage. On this site, 15.95 for 5kg + postage. Seems to be a huge difference. Does it really make that much difference, if any?
Has anyone experience of using wire bought on ebay? Bearing in mind I am thinking of making a a fence and gates as a first project, where structural strength is not as crucial, as say car bodywork, will cheap wire do? Also, I have a brand new MIG welder (Clarke 230TEC) and don't want to damage it by using poor quality wire.
Hey Eckyhen, welcome, and hoots! You can get good wire at a local supplier for little more than ebay prices, and no delivery costs (if you pick it up). BOC Dundee will sort you. Or any one of a number of suppliers... Google Welding Supplies, and the town/city of your choice...
Thanks for all the encouragement. Just fitted a 32 amp plug and socket in the garage and wiring should be OK (I think) 6mm2 from house although the last couple of feet to the socket is only 2.5mm2 but should be OK for intermittent current - if it catches fire at least I can see it. Thanks to Drains for the advice about the wire. Still looking for gas supplier who does not want me to sell my soul in exchange for a bottle of
CO2. I've got an old pub bottle that's just about empty and out of test. Any ideas?
There are a few on ebay but can't firnd a courier who will take full bottles. DHL will but quoted £62.58!
If I get the junk out of the garage I may find enough space to play with my new toy.
Bigjoe, I'll put pics when I get done, maybe even this year.
