Hello all

it seems that oerlikon spezial has taken over the shelves at most suppliers in Denmark. Found a lost box of Gricon 7018 in the corner. Says lincoln electric made in Holland. According to the shop manager they were at some point imported by migatronic to Denmark.

Haven't had a go with them yet but can anyone chime in with some info ?

They are a wonderful product............I designed it....... :whistle:

A black glassy slag type similar to the spezial........which was the aim

They were made by Lincoln for the Messer Lincoln division who were trying to "stand alone" within the Lincoln group. The idea being if they kept the Messer names such as Gricon, Grinox, Gridur etc etc they could sell to different distributors than the main Lincoln range.

They were originally UK made but moved to Holland (Smitweld in Nijmegen) when UK was closed

Thank you for taking you time to chime in. I will give them a go and see what I like. I am by no means an arc welder and thus it is probably my skills that lacks if it goes wrong.

Just for interest. How do you go about developing an electrodes in a laboratory setting? I guess you formulate a flux with Na,K or Li silicates and combine it with the rest of the TiO2, carbonates and what have you.

Do you then cast the electrode and heat cure the silicate in some sort of mould or how is it done ?

I have been formulating adhesives and paints for a large part of my working life and I have a feeling that at least some of the raw materials are going to be the same.

The flux consists of minerals / chemicals / metals held together by alginates / clays and sodium or potassium silicate (waterglass). This is mixed and formed into a paste of similar consistency to plasticine. It is then extruded through a die and onto a length of wire.
Its awkward to explain but its a simple operation.

I have 4 box of Messer Gricon 6013-OV. I have used some. What are the specific purpose?

TechnicAl is the man for anything related to welding rod brands, types, specifications, MIG wire too, procedures for welding less common steels - and probably loads more that I'm not aware of.

I don't think there is anybody on this forum who's knowledge on these things comes close to that of TechnicAl. He's a wiz

If I recall correctly they were best in Vertical Up position but OK in the others. I think they were the same rod as WRX50 or Omnia 50 but rebadged as Messer.

PS Bill............did I ever tell you that my Dad was from Scarborough. He was born on Spring Bank up the back of the town.......backing on to Falsgrave. I have a few relatives still there but we arent in contact any more. I used to spend my summers with an aunt on Valley Road. I love the place. My kids tease me when I start with the Scarboro Tales. I love Peasholm Park but its not what it used to be when there were the birds etc. We have a holiday there most years, last year we rented a house on Quay St just behind the Harbour. I had an uncle who lived on the same street who had a fishing boat, many years ago. My first paid job was on the front with Jimmy Corrigan...........sweeping up.

Nah, you never said anything about your family. Spring Bank - it's not the area I'm familiar with, I've done no more than drive round that general area and know nothing about it.
Falsgrave I go to a fair bit though.
First jobs being menial tanks - I was chipping the slag off the welds done by the old chap making a leveller, a few years later it was me doing the critical welds! How things change eh!
Pity you aren't a bit nearer, though 100 ish miles isn't that far really, I reckon you'd be a great chap to have a pint with. :drunk:

Bill...........Which area do you live.............I used to be involved with the bus maker Plas....whatever (i cant remember their full name).... and for years I visited Wards at Sherburn later Severfield Reeve.
Me and my boys had a week in the Newcastle Packet on the harbourside last year...........live band........musically rubbish but funny a f**k.

I live in Scalby, about 6 miles from Plaxtons, the bus/coach maker. Some time ago I actually had two tours of their factory.
I know where Wards is, went there for something, quite some years ago

Scalby Mills ? I remember it well.....when I was a kid we once stayed in Collins Cosy Camp.......we had a friend who was a singer and she got a booking there.....it think it was her first, and last. I guess we went along for moral support.

There was also the pub on the winding road down to the beach (where the sea life centre is now). We used to sit outside and get serenaded by the bloke with the accordion

Here I go........my lads will be embarrassed

You are right they are really good. I liked them most on electrode minus. the arc is a bit more unstable than the specials ( could also be due to the wind today though). but the slag was really brittle and peels off and the weld was nice and smooth. Lousy me even succeeded in a vertical up practice strings without runners. I will consider getting the rest of the box (3x6kg) from the shop. Current I am baking a few at 250 celcius for few hours and see what that does.

I cannot really comment on you ventures in Scarborough as I have never been there. However I just returned from a nice but rainy trip to Lancashire. Standard full day rain but saw a fish and chips shop called the Codfather. best laugh of the day.

Your explanation of the electrode production process is crystal clear thank you.
