Grimston grinder

Is anyone familiar with these -

and, after some very minor attention -

I was given it about a decade ago. Someone was moving out of a rental place, and it had been left behind by the previous tenant.

Its lurked in a store here ever since and ive just come across it now.

It weighs way more than you would expect a small unit to do so.


Theres a section on Grimston drills on "lathes.co.uk" and some photos of machinery sales, but thats all ive found in my casual looking.

I mean its only a grinder, and its missing its guards, but its old and surprisingly heavy, hence of a little more interest to me.

Curiously the roller bearing (I think) is quite visible from the end that does not have the wheel and seems to have no way of injecting grease.

It was gritty when spun by hand. I attempted to blow it out which has made a difference but it's basically dry.

Maybe this is how it's supposed to be, but it seems odd.

looking at the bolt holes at that end might make me think it originally had another wheel at that end? Need some good pics?

Yes, sorry, it was certainly dual wheel.

I'll take some more photos next time I'm close to it.

I hadn't seen these Grimston grinders before, look like a proper solid bit of gear. I'll have to keep an eye out for one as it looks ideal for grinding spindle moulder cutters.

Don't paint it red.

I honestly have seen worse, I remember someone sending me a photo of a lathe (can't remember the brand, very old obviously) from a museum that had been painted entirely, the chuck was green, the ways were green, the handwheels and dials were green, the feed screw was green... You could argue that the average punter wouldn't realise it wasn't operable like that and the paint is actually doing a good job of preserving the machine.

A friend has one on its pedestal.
Lovely grinder, chunky bearings, seems like it takes 10 minutes to run down.
Well worth the effort to clean-up/run.
