Grinder Pedestal

Just finished this one. Base = 20mm thick, post = 3.5 inch tube, stiffeners = 6mm thick, rubber feet, coolant tray = 50mm box section with one side cut off and ends capped and cable tidy = odd bits.

Not having any bolt holes in the base to fix it to the floor or a wider base thats on lockable castors ?

I say this because it would seem top heavy , especially when you bung the grinder on it.

I wanted it movable hence no holes to fix to floor. The base plate is pretty heavy. Have tried my 6 inch bench grinder on it and it seems stable. One thing I would do different next time is to cut the inside (90 degree) corner off the stiffeners to clear the weld on the base to tube and stop the vertical/horizontal welds on the stiffener short off the corner. I have learnt this makes for a neater intersection.
First job I have done with my new MIG. Probably my stick welder would have been better for the base to pipe.

Beats the crap out of mine, its just a car wheel rim with a cob end of steel welded on the inside to make it heavy, and a bit of scaffolding, that said it works.
I found that welding on 3 12mm nuts on the base is a good idea, as it stops the base from rocking on my uneven shop floor.

Thanks Dr Pepper. My garage floor is uneven also, so I put on some rubber feet made from standard door stops.

Make the base a bit longer then you can stand on it to hold it down

I put an M10 caphead screw in mine, just one, hanging out the bottom of one side bolt hole.

Now I chuck it in the vice, clamp up on the bolt and grind away
