what are the best ones to use ,i was thinking of going for the 'ski' type ones that give good coverage around the eyes

I will agree with that choice, I can't fault Uvex Ultrasonic goggles.

Comfortable, fit over most prescription glasses, and don't steam up.

X2 on this one. I too use the Uvex. Specs are useless as the sparks can still get behind and into your eyes.

Yes X2, even if you wear safety specs-- proper ones to adjust ya eyesight, make sure you you cover the specs with a set of Goggles.
Normal safety specs --NO No No

I hate goggles or safety glasses, I prefer a face shield. I prefer not to have sparks hitting me in the face full stop its an irritating distraction, and they tend to singe my beard

Face shield for me as well, I am a specs wearer and find it easier and more comfortable than goggles.
