GYS Hermes 9/13 helmet

After the cheapy turned its toes up, I was casting around for another one, when I discovered this. Less than half the new price, possibly a refurb, not sure yet.

Took a punt on it anyway, and it seems to be coming from a French supplier, so not certain what the real score is.

Well, at least it has replaceable batteries and seems to be a step up from the last one. It will do for now.
This line in the blurb is interesting "Features include permanent protection" - I assume that means when there's a fault that I don't get arc-eye by accident, as the native blocking of the module is sufficient basic protection, even if undarkened? If so, that's a definite plus. I gave myself a bit of a sore pair of eyes with the old one, with it failing partially and then totally.

Being stupid has unpleasant after-effects, I can say in all honesty. Still, now that I know what a knackered module looks like, I'll be more careful in future.

The Hermes has arrived and a quick blast of it revealed it to be nicer to use than the old one. Not much else to say about it really, at this point, but time will allow me to fiddle with it under actual useage conditions and I'll see what's what with it.
The Test button is nice though, and the leetle knobs just beg to be tweaked.
I was considering buying another one, but the remaining two of that batch were gone within 24 hours of me posting about it.
Still, I'd not be surprised if they pop up on Amazon again - this is a brand new helmet - nothing 'used' about it at all. I suspect it was a bulk purchase or a return lot from a warehouse, etc, etc. It arrived in a totally anonymous box, not a GYS box.
It came with spare front and rear lenses (just one of each) and the optical clarity is quite good, I must say.

Interesting read far side, ive never seen one of those in the flesh or even reviewed before so I'm keen to know how the story goes.
2 weeks on have you had much more use out of it.
It's usually priced towards the upper bracket so I wonder how it fairs up against the competition.
Looks a sleek looking lid (not keen on pretty pictures)
Do you ever do Tig welding? Be nice to know how it performs on low current.

I bought one at the same time, only used it for tig and it's very good (compared to a cheap helmet) no problems on low amp tig, very crisp change, very light I was welding up some car trailer ramps and had it on for most of the day and barely noticed it on, headband is comfy and basic, for some that's a bad thing but for me it's a plus

I've not used it on TIG (not set up for that, yet), or MIG so far, but MMA at 70-100A it performs well. At first, there seemed to be a slight delay on darkening with the first flash of the day, but after that it was ok for the rest of the session. After a couple of days that delay disappeared and it's working fine. Very comfortable, as you said - basic, but fits well.
I'm quite happy with it and only paid the same as for a cheapy, so not much to complain about, really

its French, the chin area design allows you keep a Gauloise in your gob with the shield down, and the bottom scoopy bit deflects the ash so it don't drop into the puddle.

But they are pretty good, I used one at the GYS welding school, I thought it was lighter than my 3M ??

I bought one of these recently too because I was getting flashed on low amp TIG with my existing Draper helmet.
Very impressed so far. Lght, comfy and much brighter in the light state making it easy to do some prep work without even lifting the helmet.
I did some practice runs on an old 0.5mm or less stainless kettle at 10 amps in bright sunlight and it performed faultlessly.
Only 2 sensors but they seem well placed on the cartridge.
Very pleased for under £50.
