Gys SmartMig 162 or Portamig 215 for fast learning

Hi Guys - Would like to try my hand at doing some mig welding and have been reading this forum for the last 4 wks to get an idea on what is needed. I have never welded before although have done some plumbing around the house.I would like to make a couple of Go-Karts and undertake a few DIY tasks. I am now at the point of purchasing a welder.

My question is will buying a more expensive welder Portamig 215 make it easier for me to lay a good weld as oppose to purchasing a GYS SmartMIG 162I appreciate practise makes perfect but if buying a better machine helps then I am happy to consider this.
Any thoughts or advise please. Regards Steve

The portamig will be a more useful machine with the extra power but is no more likely to lay a better weld within the smartmig's capabilities.

Welcome to the forum, both machines are good in their own right and I doubt either could be given the 'easier to learn' on title.

A good hobby machine will lay a weld as good as the Portamig, I have had both.

The portamig is the next step up from a hobby machine and an excellent step up at that, the extra power is useful, it will weld longer without suffering from overheating and probably last many more years.

It will also need an uprated electric supply to run at the top end of it's range.

The saying buy once and buy right is very true.

My welding has improved no end since getting it.

Wise choice. Check out the machine forums, nothing but comments like "I've ordered one" "Mines on it's way" etc. Not many problems at all.

Hi Wallace thanks for the offer but I will be clearing out the garage and ordering next week. Looking at the comments on here would you say South West Gas would be the best option for gas, given my location. Also could you recommend a local steel stockist appreciate their loads when I google but prefer recommendations. Thanks Steve

I use BOC Slough for gas and lately KR Tools in Staines. Steel suppliers have been a bit of a problem lately, Acton Bright were VERY expensive last time I asked so I started dealing with Cripps in Feltham but these two are probabaly a bit far out for you.
