Loading a tool it to my qctp and did this I thought it was steel but no


So though I would have a go at making some this might be a simple task for some folks but has made me think lol
Bought a lump of steel bar from local steel stockiest cut a chunk off poped it in the mill and got to this

Had a measure of the angles so back in the mill for the first cuts

So as far as i have got is to here

not to bad just got to mill slot for tools and drill and tap holes and machine to final size

Nice job, Dickson tool holders are nice to make as they don't require the use of a dovetail cutter.

Good work, that must be a bear to set up on a vertical. Ideally you'd mill the vees on a horizontal so you can get the distance perfect using gauge blocks or a dial.

Here's a tip: If you set the angle up like you have in the pic but make sure the other end is over-hanging the vice, you can use trigonometry to figure out how to cut both vees on one setup and the pitch will be perfect.

I can't find any videos on you tube on making disks on tool holders on a lathe..

These tool holders look quite simple but apparently the original. Sizes were a few thousand different from fractional sizes. I have some originals that are slack but new ones are tight and some I ordered did not fit my boxford post..
Also they are made hardened as I thought I'd get away with filing out the centre slot but it was too hard.
If it's not hardened than it may wear quickly.

How did you set the spacing for the two Vee's correctly?

I measured the original and marked it out on the block I machined.
I also made a right angle to put on mill vice to set the angle each time I removed it and then got it milled near my marks and kept compering to the original,it was trial and error.
I know thats not very machinist of me but not having any formal training on a mill or lathe other than watching YouTube videos.
So I do what works for me

Make the bolts - it's less of a 'challenge' than the toolholder...

My lathe only does imperial and I cant find any conversion gears It an early Viceroy Im on the look for a metric one

Both of my lathes use socket head screws for the tool holders. Using square heads might be traditional but the heads (and the wrench) use up more space.

M8 grub screws? key size 4mm which may be a little small for your use
