Handheld soda blaster

Afternoon all.

Does anyone have any experience of these handheld soda blasters ? I have lots of aluminium engine parts that after lots of degreasing dont seem clean enough to take paint yet, would one of these work ?

Never tried one of those but it costs about half the price of a small cabinet (including a gun). If you can find the space for a cabinet, it might be worth going the whole way?

I already have a small cabinet, but my engine block wont fit in there..., plus i also need to use soda.

time is one thing i certainly dont have, ha. Humm, they dont fill me with confidence. Perhaps ill stick to the brake cleaner and hope its clean enough for the paint to adhere.

on painted ally i use kiln dried sand with a pressure pot and gives a good key finish without any damage

As these are engine components i wouldnt considered anything but soda.

no need if all; the machined parts are covered up done hundreds of them

Have you tried oven cleaner on the parts to remove oxidisation. Or plain caustic soda

I havent. Just Jizer, other general degreaser and acetone. All have worked, but its the oxidation and engrained dirt that remains. Ive avoided caustic soda as its all aluminium.

Is it bare aluminium or has the lacquer/paint started to suffer? Cautic Soda or caustic based drain or oven cleaners aren't as bad as some would have you believe. You just need to be setup before starting.
Dont leave it. keep agitating watching for the reaction to start, it will bubble. As soon as you are happy its clean enough. Flush with running water. If it hasnt removed it all, Repeat.

PPE is a must. Caustic burns even when you have run it under the tap for what seems hours. Vinegar may help neutralising it

Sealey stuff used be pretty good (I've got a trolley jack that's still in use after more than 40 years) not sure whether they still are but I've certainly never heard anyone say anything too bad about them. For that price, may well be worth talking a punt... and reporting back

I would bother wasting money on one of them guns, have you tried screw fix degresser let it soak for approx 15-20mins and a diesel powered hot water pressure washer it amsing what ours will shift

ok for spark plugs, anything bigger and it will take ages...... I get bored using my portable unit, and I have got my cabinet working quite well but have just sent the front suspension and bonnet out for blasting, just takes me tooooo long, spend half the time sifting grit and refilling the pot!

I've had one for around 30 yrs in use . . . flippin' thing has always sunk slowly, right from new . . .

I have tried, but perhaps not left on for that period, ill try that again, and perhaps some caustic if I'm feeling brave. Afterall i do need to only get this block clean enough for paint to hold. Although i do have other parts that would benefit from some soda treatment. I also found a Gunson branded gun (although theres many other unbranded that look identical) that looks better, and its cheaper. Blasting still very much appeals for those tight areas, after getting a small cabinet, its a joy to watch the schmutz disappear. Think ill try some more degreasing at the weekend and make a call. Thanks all.

Fairy Power Spray and a toothbrush is good on dirty car parts, though you obviously don't get the finish soda blasting gives.

I find all these implements and air gadgets use a huge amount of air. You need a whopper of a compressor, or to continually stop to allow the compressor to refill.

Plus one on sealed being rubbish -every single thing I've bought from them has failed in one way or another. My rule is - never!
