Happy life with large electrodes

OK - a visit to my usual welding shop in the other end of the country. Friendly folks who filled my trunk with electrodes, turbular wire, ceramic backing etc for next to nothing. nice way to spend a few hours.

Among what I got was 18 kg of 700 mm long 6 mm maxeta 6 electrodes. They are "acid-rutile" electrodes. I have not had a go with them yet and I expect that i need to give them some power to get them going. Will they bring happiness ?

Also I got a few packages of 4mm E6012 Lincoln Supra. Easiest rod I have ever welded with

I have used Elga Maxeta 22 6mm x 600mm Iron powder rods at 400amps then down to about 360amps when everything was getting hot before.

I am a great fan of Elga welding rods, we use a lot of 312 Chromarod's here.

Nobody I speak to rates Elga stuff, but I get on with it OK.

just watch the slag it tends to ping off while cooling down , can be dangerous and painful !

Stainless self releasing slag is evil stuff for sure.

Fumes can be bad, only h@s rollicking I ever got was using them without ppe or extractors on

Always wear safety glasses whilst stick welding stainless. As said above, the slag pings off whilst it is cooling.

I had a piece of hammer removed from my eye. Glasses every day now. Nearly a very costly lesson.

supprising how forgiving the eye really is and how quickly it heals itself in younger age

I'll admit I absolutely crapped myself when I felt it hit my eye and stay there. Just a moment of unthinking, someone came in and spoke to me as I finished the run, lifted my mask to reply and bang

OK -- i make sure to wear the complete carbon arc outfit, even though it seems a bit excessive. I actually find that having to make a hole with OA cutting is something that has to be done carefully to avoid large lumps of molten metal on the wrong side of the helmet.
