Guys. I find myself having to let in a small patch repair in a large car rear quarter panel that I can't replace. In the past I've used heat sink putty to reduce distortion. Can anyone recommend a current product please.
Have you considered a copper bar? I've bought a few different sizes (just cut lengths of bar from a metal supplier, or a water pipe hammered flat) and clamp them on behind the joint, which also helps to keep the joint edges flat and aligned. I have seen ones available for purchase with strong magnets let in so clamps aren't required, but they seemed a bit pricey for what they are so I'm going to try making my own.
Isn’t it the shrinkage after welding that causes the distortion? Peening the weld can remove the distortion, apparently, and I’ve had minor success with it myself.
is it Mig, or tig you’re using?
If it accessible, i use copper as a backing to stop the weld blowing out. However. This is within a box section so getting anything behind is not possible, hence the question
Not very often if memory is good the outer layer went hard like a pie crust.
