This unit keeps the blades in phase
on MD500 and Sweitzer 300 rotor heads.
One on left is how it is, on right one I have dissected it allows the blade to lead and lag..
It has a test procedure and a time life the rubber goes hard and you find the blade won't phaze 2flts of the nut is the tolerance. They should ll come back to the datum within a specified time

I did some work for a chap who worked off shore, he said travelling by helicopter is trusting you life to 100,000 parts vibrating around an oil leak

Interesting to see. I’ve worked on a variety of fixed wing, mostly ww2 era aircraft but not helis. I must change that sometime

All that's holding a CFM56 engine onto the wing of a 737 are 8 relatively small bolts. I've got a couple u/s ones, I'll take a photo.

no your not. if the engine fails you can disengage the rotor and come down and feather the blades and land ok .its standard practice every year was in my mates copter when he did one just tough **** if your over the sea

The 500 has 3 X 5/16 bolts holding the turbine in.
If engines fails there is a free wheel that. disengage the rotor, then you use the collective to keep the rotors in the green arc, if you don't get the pitch of the blades quick enough they stall, not good. it needs to be a memory reaction, it is part of your training and yearly test, the Hull will also try and rotate left or right according to main blade rotation most US rotate anti clock European designed ones clock wise, both needs pedal input to counter.

Nope. I was in Shetland waiting for a ride to the rig when the last chopper crashed few miles from the beach, they all died.

The training is academic, survival rates are slim to nothing

I didn't think they would be that low with the survival suits and breathing aids they have now but can't find any figures I am curious, Horrible conditions to try and survive in

Dosent look like many of the recently reported ones have had many survivors , Maybe fair a better chance working offshore in Africa or something where its warmer

I may be being flippant but when you go on any offshore survival course they tell you your survival rates in a crash are pretty low

Survival suit and three layers gives you 30 mins, but you have to survive impact, drowning and getting chopped up first

Never been on one ,, yet I do plan on it at some point

How comforting lol , Wonder what rescue times are like suppose it depends how far away you crash if anyone can get there in that time.

Spent 20 years going to rigs on choppers

It one of those low potential high consequence situations
