Hi everyone, just joined up after buying my first MIG welder. I've done MIG and a bit of TIG welding in the past when i was at Uni but now i'm looking to learn properly and get a qualification so i can look at a career move. Hope to learn some valuable information on this site.

Hi Mike. I studied MotorSport Engineering at Uni which i now have a Degree in but when i left Uni i struggled to find any jobs i liked and ended up working as a Labourer for a Groundworks company. I now work in a shop that sells motorsport parts which is fine but the money is quite poor. There are a few factories local to me that employ skilled welders and the pay is very good so i'm looking to move in to that, just need to actually be skilled first

If they are advertising a lot for welders it could be there is a shortage, worth looking back through old evening post to see if that's so. It's worth looking for a job with them as a welders mate, some one who helps with the fitup prior to welding. That is one way of getting you foot in the door but it may be classed as a semi skilled job (and pay reflected) sorry to any welders mates reading this. I am not putting the job down. Another route is as a fitters mate similar to above. Having done an engineering apprentiship many many many..... years ago I see it's now not so easy to get into engineering with training. As with most jobs skilled or experenced required seams to be what is asked for. You could try another avenue such as the hospital in chippenham they have maintaince departments. Just a thought...
