i am new to the forum and a competent MIG welder, i have just finished Uni and moved out into the really real world and am looking at possibly buying a ac/dc TIG to weld ally and steel etc. or a nice MIG for less money as a bit of a sacrifice on the ally side of things.

hello and welcome to the forum. my advice is if you can afford a good ac/dc TIG, then go for it. Otherwise invest your cash in a good MIG such as Portamig
