Hello and compressor question

Hi guys
I am new to the forum and need some expert advice.
Have come back to small scale car and motorcycle painting on a part time basis.
I need to buy a compressor. I have been looking at second hand hydrovane type 5 but not sure weather to go for it. Also, not sure it will be up to the job in terms of output.
The stumble for me is it is 3 phase and I only have a single phase supply. I have no experience of inverters so I'm being put off.
Do I spend say £500 on a 'normal' single phase compressor (probably used), or buy the hydrovane and an inverter for similar money.
Noise is also a small consideration. (I could box in a noisy compressor)

Any help and advice will be greatly appreciated.

have u looked in to it to see if a 3 phase hydrovane would run ok of an inverter .size and cost would enter in to it as well u need to do some homework 1st

What CFM are you looking for? Elderly screw compressor can be pricey if you need parts.

I have looked into it and it is very confusing. From what I can make out, it would work and the guy selling says it would, but why would he say anything else lol!
Inverters seems to be around the £125 mark.
I am a very practical person, But I have no idea on how complicated it would be to connect.

I am looking at enough to be able to spray the odd car. From what I can make out it seems around 14cfm is required?
Its not a screw, its a hydrovane. To be completely honest, I'm not entirely sure of the differences except Screw seem to be more expensive and bigger outputs.

a screw compressor it what it says2 rotary screws. a hydrovane is a vane comppressor with rotary plates to compress . both expensive to buy and service a good belt driven piston pump compressor a lot cheaper and nothing to go wrong

OK thanks for explaining the differences, what make and spec piston / belt would you recommend?

read through the spec on them a slow running belt driven with cast iron liners would be the best. a few members may be of help that have them and can advise mine are home made or second hand

But Hydrovane comps are a lot quieter.

You won't get 14cfm from a single phase supply unless you opt for a twin motor job but they are very pricey for what they are, make sure you look at the free air delivery figure, a 3hp motor is rated under 10cfm fad. I think the inverters start to get quite pricey once your past a couple of hp, the ones I've seen anyhow so would negate any saving?

17 cfm requires 3hp 2.2kw to 150 psi with 2 stage pump which is easily achievable on 1ph.

Can you link a 3hp 1ph compressor that puts out 17 cfm?

OK I have made some enquiries and the Hydrovane motor is 1.2kw. Do you think it iw worth buying.
I have been offered a new Nu Air 3hp 150ltr single phase for £450 plus vat. Are they a good compressor & will it do what I need?

Take a lil while to recoup the extra £5k me thinks tho. How the hell are they so expensive?
