Hello all. Seems like a friendly kind of place this, so I thought it only right I should post a little bit about me in here, why I am here, and what I am up to.
First off, I am not really a newcomer to welding as such. I've spent the past 19 years of my life as a mechanic, or more specifically a motor engineer. I am the senior engineer/workshop manager at a large Rolls Royce and Bentley specialists. Of course, with them being British, and in a lot of cases, elderly, I am quite adept at carrying out welding repairs, though only MOT type repairs. Replacing spring cups on the rear trailing arms, and the odd bit of chassis welding. We have an on-site bodyshop for the more intricate repairs, but favours do not exist with them.
So that brings me to my reasons for being here. I have a penchant for Jaguars. I love them. All my previous ones have been cosmetically in reasonable shape, however things are changing, and the latest collection are not really the best. I am here to gain a bit of knowledge with regards to the more cosmetic type repairs and reconstruction, and indeed making the "unseen" repairs neater and more factory looking. I aim to photograph and post my current batch of projects so as to gain some constructive critiscism. I've never tried butt welding bodywork and is a skill I am eager to learn, having been spurred on by my latest acquisition, a 1990 jaguarsport xjr-4.0a. By no means a basket case, there are some repairs needed. Both rear wheelarches, a repair to the front inner wing, and a repair to the rear deck round the filler neck. This will be the first victim. The second victim is a 1987 v12 xjs, good underneath, but has had a really poor respray, which I have no doubt is hiding all sorts of horrors. Sorry for the essay folks, but the information may mean my being pointed in the right directions!
Dan.
