Hi.
My names Adam and im an old Citroen car enthusiast, hence the need for welder I have a Migmate Handymig. The car im trying to weld up is a Citroen CX. I bought it off Ebay before Christmas thinking it needed one tiny patch of welding, a new backbox and an MOT. How wrong I was. I have spent £750 on the car and its purchase price was £250. I was inspecting the welding I have done to the car, feeling pleased with my first few good patches, ever, when I stumbled accross a bit of flaking underseal. I prodded with a screwdriver, and in the end ended up grinding out a 15 by 15 cm square section My welding seemed to have tuned to rubbish. Incidentally, my welding was awful when I tried in the past, so before attempting the CX, I searched the internet and found this website. Thanks for all the tips!! I have managed to weld two sections of the longerons underneath the car, using a seam weld, ground down to look neater etc. And a front wheelarch repair (the curved inner section where all the mud hits) was successful.
However, the "new" bit of rust I found is above this area, and for some reason, my welder either vaporises the plate and car, or wont penetrate. I have just read about 6mm or 8mm wire, so perhaps the wire im using this time round is the 8mm and I was using 6 before.
Whoever is responsible for the site, thankyou!! Being "almost" able to weld a few good sections, I read this internet DIY sections and was confident that when I went back to it, I could do it, and I could. Its not brilliant, hence the need for grindin down the lines, but when I do, the penetration was such that the new metal merges with the old to make a potentially invisable repair. Shame I seem to have lost the nack though:-(
Cheers, Adam
