Good morning guys and gals,
I thought i would introduce myself on here... My name is Marc.... and i'm an alcoholic... Doh, sorry, wrong forum!
Anyhow, joking aside, I have been lurking around this site searching out information as i wish to dive, head first, into Tig welding.
I've done some gas welding a long time in the past (10 years or so) and have had a tiny dabble at the Mig (and a minuscopic dabble at tig), and drool with envy at my friend who can tig up an entire exhaust system in seconds!
I am into classic & american cars, I currently own a 1972 Pontiac Firebird Formula 350 V8 and with help from my father, between us we have rebuild this, a 1971 triumph GT6, my fathers 1965 ford f100 american truck and a 1965 Mustang coupe too.
Anyway, back onto the subject that brought me here, i wish to learn the art form of tig welding, hopefully to get good enough to use this welding process on my own vehicle, as well as others and hopefully, in the future, earn a living from it. I hopefully wish to be able to weld AC and DC to be an all rounder really. I know its going to take time and practice but i have the enthausiasm for this now!
Sorry my first post is a bit long winded, i just did not want to leave anything out.
After my research on here, i have decided which tig welder i wish to purchase (in a week or so) and I wanted to ask you guys on here about certain qualifications you can gain along the way in regards to TIG welding. I live near Ipswich, suffolk and I enquired about a welding course at West suffolk College, from which i could attain a level 1 City & Guilds 3268. The course has already started back in september and i missed the boat so to speak but they rang me to see if i wished to join in (albeit a bit late now), but they still want the full fee for the course.
Is this a complete waste of time and money or would i be better off having a bit of practice with the tig when i get it and go for a level 2 city and guilds that starts next september? Or is the C&G qualification a complete waste of time? In the future i am looking to gain coded qualifications, but what is the right step forward?
Many thanks for your time reading my post and i hope to stay on here a while yet! Hopefully in the future i can help newbies too!
