Hey all I just registered and just got my first welder it's a Maxus 140 mig welder. It works for learning I just had a few newbie questions.

1. Do you need an air compressor to run gas or what all do I need?

2. What all do I need to weld aluminum? I've tried it with my flux core wire and it didnt really work.

You need 75/25% Argon/CO2 or straight CO2 for steel and ER70-6 wire.

For aluminum you need pure argon and the appropriate wire (4043 or 5356).

You will need a bottle and a regulator, find a local welding gas supplier. Argon/CO2 mixes use one type of regulator, CO2 uses another fitting. Make sure to see about off-contract gas (no monthly rental.) Most in the US don't do it but they try an push it.

Unless you want to buy two bottles, I'd suggest forgetting about aluminum.
