Hi folks,
I'm the sculpture technician at the uni here so I run the metal and casting workshops and help in the wood workshop when they're busy.
I spent 6yrs as a specialist in air cooled vw restoration too so I'm familiar with bodywork. Here's my last project that I've just recently sold to fund rebuilding my garage/favela.
I'm hoping to build my new garage from steel but am unfamiliar with what thickness and shape of materials to use (hence joining this forum)

Welcome aboard, Kenny Are those exposed rear rims legal? I'd have thought they would have to be enclosed in some way to minimise spray, stones etc?

Keep in mind re the garage that the more steel work involved, the greater chance of condensation there'll be - unless it's going to be fully lined?

A steel frame fair enough but steel sheeting would end up costlier than most alternative materials due to the amount of insulation and lining material required to stop it looking like a swimming pool internally, before I sorted my steel roof the water dripping when the conditions were right (or wrong) was unbelievable, everything was soaked.

I did end up sticking mudguards on the rear due to threats from the police, yes it is a legality!

I've started a thread in the architecture part of the forum on the subject. What alternative sheet materials would you recommend? It'll need to come in on budget and I'd like it to live longer than I do. Blockwork would be too expensive due to needing good founds and my lack of skill in laying blocks also puts me off.

Well if you are aged 90 or over a good thick cardboard may be just the job

Seriously, it's understandable budget is a criteria as with most people but a garage that is built to a standard that annoys you every winter due to cold, damp and condensation or even summer when the sheets are too hot to touch will not be nice living with.

Blocks or wood are the two I would consider, neither will be exactly cheap, you could keep an eye open on the likes of face book for pre cast sections, many are fairly generic in size and can be built to any size and shape with a bit of thought.

A lot depends on what standard of appearance you want to end up with as well.

@kenneth waters Personally, I'd go with wood - lasts well and you can bang nails in it to hang things up. And if you think you don't have much 'stuff', just wait - it breeds in dark conditions........

Id go wood to, itll breath, just build a 4x1.5 frame, cover in 6 mm ply, batten it use roof membrane then board it, dry and wind roof. Better security too

Welcome, the front wings would not pass IVA either never mind the rears, I guess that was using the VW floorpan and bolting on another body?

Looks like your projects could be interesting, I will watch out for them.

welcome to the forum, why not peruse Gumtree for a prefab garage or there is a 7m x 7m metal one in Gretna for £200.
