hi i will post this here because im not too sure where else to ask, my question doesnt really fit in any single thread
20 years ago i tought myself to gas weld working in a back street garage, it really was back street in them days, we didnt even use proper welding rods we welded cars using coat hangers! since then i've barely touched oxy kit other than to use the gas axe and to do the odd bit of brazing which im not to bad at, good enough i can cut fuel tanks open and braze them back up again without leaks.
i next learned to mig, which ive been doing ever since and as you might of guessed 20 years practice means im pretty handy at it.
what i would like to do it is be able to weld alloy, nothing serious, but be able to make the odd bracket or mod/repair a cast alloy manifold or sump.
ive heard people say if you can gas weld then your also be able to tig, im not so sure on that.
no body seems to gas weld alloy so perhaps i should forget that or is it actually practical?
to tig weld i would need a tig welder and learn a new technique,
as im more at home with the mig perhaps the best thing to do is get a new mig with a spool torch?
being past the age where i pick stuff up really quick i probably need to look to making best use of skills i already have rather than learning something totally new. anyone got any thoughts?
thanks in advance graham
