Hi guys (and girls?)

I'm Joules, a jobbing bodger of all manner of things. I'm looking at getting a decent mig set. Having learn't to TIG weld at Chesterfield college, but since found I couldn't afford a good set of equipment (might still get a cheapy inverter). So I have been looking at Portamig, and Murex Tradesmig (minty!!!). Then hope to learn more from there. My areas of interest are light fabrication (thin sheet/model engineering) upto 6mm stationary engine frames, whatever. My former trade was that of a computer engineer when computers used to be made out of components, not boards!!!

Don't mention Portatigs on here - Weldequip is really good at persuading you splash out . I ordered a Portamig.

There are some cool TIG welders on eBay for a fairly reasonable price. The AC sets seem to go for £800, but there are often some nice DCs on there. Have you tried MIG before? I'd guess TIG would be better for model engineering. Takes much longer, requires good positioning and orientation of components, but if does make much neater welds.

I love TIG, but 4yrs ago the AC equipment was just too much. I work in mainly non ferrous metals, though more steel now as I am playing with diesel generators (and bits of them). Guess we shall have to see, as the PORTATIG is soooo tempting, especially the lack of inverter electronics.

I was just figuring MIG (quality) units being more bomb proof, and repairable.

They do a bomb proof AC/DC TIG aswell, yours for less than a grand!!
